Daily Behavior Report Card (DBRC) is a means of communicating behavioral progress between the school and the home. The steps to using a DBRC are listed in Figure 7.10. The teacher marks the student’s progress towards a pre-specified goal on the card and sends it home to the parent. If the student reaches the goal then the parent provides a reinforcer at home, or the teacher provides a reinforcer at school, or both. Reinforcers can be daily, weekly, or both. Parents review the DBRC daily and discuss progress with the child. An example of the DBRC is provided in Figure 7.11. DBRCs include specific goals for improved behavior, such as “complete 80% of assignments” or “follow rules on the playground with less than two violations.” The goals are individually designed to meet the needs of the student. Criteria for improvement should be attainable and can change as the child reaches his own goal(s). The effectiveness of the DBRC is dependent on the level of parental involvement and the level of use at school.7 Therefore, we encourage parents to consistently check the DBRC daily and provide reinforcement consistently. Teachers are encouraged to use the DBRC throughout the day. One of our coauthors (KJV) is the also the coauthor8 of the electronic-DBRC (e-DBRC) that is available free to teachers at http://d2k.tamu.edu/products/e-dbrc.php after a training with the staff.
